For all University of Pittsburgh Community Members

This includes current active Students, Faculty, and Staff of University of Pittsburgh - the following steps apply to gaining direct user access to the NanoScale Fabrication and Characterization Lab, located in the Sub Basement floor of Benedum Hall, room SB 60-63.  If you are a faculty member and do not wish to gain direct access to operate the equipment yourself, you may reach out to us about planning for arrival for your students or for options related to service.

General Lab Access Certification
  1. Ensure that you have an FOM account or create one: FOM - User Registration
  2. Complete the basic (pre-covid) training that can be found here - Environmental Health and Safety - NFCF Training
  3. Send me a copy of Chem Hygiene - CITI Access Portal – University of Pittsburgh (screenshot or forward email)
  4. Watch the updated general training compliance conference call recording - https://youtu.be/gtSV8k7SFII 
  5. Email nfcf@pitt.edu and include: copy of certification document from #3, confirmation of watching #4, and a photo of the front/back of your Pitt ID (or if you don’t have one yet let me know)
    • For a physical card Pitt ID, send a photo of the front/back of the physical card.
    • For a virtual card Pitt ID, go to Pitt’s E-Accounts app (aka TransAct), click Accounts on the front page, then click “show barcode” on that page and send a screenshot of the barcode page.
    • If you don’t have any Pitt ID at all, please see instructions below on obtaining one.

General lab access grants you access to all equipment listed in characterization side of the lab.

Cleanroom Lab Access Certification

Based on your research needs, you may additionally wish to prepare for cleanroom equipment access.  We recommend to only pursue this step if you have confirmed need for equipment in the Cleanroom within the next 6 months.  Lithography, Deposition, Dry Etching, Surface profiling, Thermal processing, and Hoods are all located in the cleanroom.  Submitting a request for a piece of equipment in the cleanroom will automatically prompt the orientation.

Note: Please complete the general lab orientation steps above, first, as prerequisite.

  1. Cleanroom basic pre-COVID training found here - Environmental Health and Safety - NFCF Training
  2. Review gowning procedure with COVID procedure included - CLEANROOM GOWNING updated for mask-optional university posture
  3. Followed by a walkthrough scheduled with Dr. Jun Chen, to finalize cleanroom access.  Before walkthrough please review the following document Microsoft Word - Cleanroom-Walkthrough20230915.
Acquiring a Pitt ID Card

Please provide the following information for your Pitt ID card request to nfcf@pitt.edu 

  • Pitt ID Request Form: Please fill out the top section with your personal information, then scroll down to approximately the middle of the form and sign on the Requestor Signature line.
  • Previous Pitt ID: Please let us know if you have ever had a Pitt ID before, even if it was issued a long time ago, is expired, or you no longer have it.
  • Photo: Please provide a recent photo of yourself that can be used for your ID card.
