[Brief Description]

Mission Statement

The mission of the Health Sciences Mass Spectrometry Core is to support the University of Pittsburgh research community by providing scientific expertise and state-of-the-art instrumentation for the analysis of small molecules, lipids, and proteins by mass spectrometry.

The Health Sciences Mass Spectrometry Core (The MSC) provides liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) services for metabolomics, lipidomics and proteomics. Our goal is to assist investigators throughout the full lifespan of their projects – from experimental design and sample preparation through statistical analysis and interpretation of datasets. We accommodate projects that range in size from isolated experiments through fee for service work to major ongoing, grant-funded collaborations. Some of our common services include:

  • Stable isotope tracing
  • Untargeted metabolomics and lipidomics
  • Targeted metabolite, protein, and lipid profiling
  • Label-free protein quantitation
  • TMT multiplexing
  • Post translational modification (PTM) analysis

We have working relationships with the Center for Metabolism and Mitochondrial Medicine, the Center for Medicine and the Microbiome, and the Small Molecule Biomarker Core to facilitate highly collaborative research involving metabolism, the microbiome, and quantitative biomarker analysis.

Citation Information

The MSC has received two shared instrumentation grants from the National Institutes of Health.  In order for the University of Pittsburgh to ensure continuing success with these awards we ask that all investigators acknowledge the grant in their publications, published abstracts, and presentations.

Work performed in the Health Sciences Mass Spectrometry Core (RRID:SCR_025222) and services and instruments used in this project were graciously supported, in part, by the University of Pittsburgh, the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, and the National Institutes of Health shared instrumentation grants S10OD023402 for lipidomics and S10OD032141 for metabolomics.

S10OD023402 was awarded in 2018 for the Thermo Fisher ID-X tribrid system and

S10OD032141 was awarded in 2022 for the Thermo Fisher Exploris 240 system.

Please inquire which system was used in your study.  Thank you for your assistance and cooperation.
