January 2026 RRN Feature: Shared Resources and iLab

The January 2026 issue of the Research Resource Nexus newsletter provides an overview of the shared research resources that support biomedical investigators at the University of Pittsburgh and introduces iLab, the web-based asset management tool Pitt implemented to streamline access to these resources.

Shared research resources, also called research core facilities, provide access to instruments, facilities and services not typically available in individual labs. These facilities offer specialized laboratory expertise, high-end equipment and expert data analysis capabilities that enable leading-edge research across disciplines. By leveraging shared resources, investigators can reduce costs, accelerate discovery and ensure the highest standards of quality and reproducibility.

Resources at Pitt

Shared facilities are integral to Pitt’s research infrastructure. The University of Pittsburgh’s schools of the health sciences support more than 40 shared biomedical research resources, with more than 70 total resources available in the Health Sciences Core Research Facilities resources portal. This web portal is a searchable database that helps investigators find resources, facility websites and contact information. Individuals can search for specific instruments or keywords and use dropdown FAQs to find resources. Examples include:

  • Innovative Technologies Development and Mouse Embryo Services cores for creating genetically engineered mouse models
  • Center for Biostatistics and Qualitative Methodology (CBQM) for comprehensive data management, statistical analysis, patient reported outcomes and more

Introducing iLab

Until recently, Pitt lacked a unified platform for scheduling, user tracking and billing across shared facilities. To address this, Pitt launched its iLab platform, a centralized system that streamlines workflows and financial tracking for both researchers and core facilities, in August 2024.

Key iLab Features:

  • Integration with Pitt Passport for single sign-on and automated account updates from Pitt’s financial office
  • Researchers can request services, reserve time on equipment and track invoices
  • Core facilities can manage workflows, scheduling and billing

As of this month, 36 shared research facilities are live in Pitt’s iLab system, with more expected to onboard throughout 2026. This includes facilities across the University’s schools, such as the School of Medicine, Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, and Swanson School of Engineering. There are different levels of access and privileges within iLab and training materials are available on the shared facilities website. Visit Pitt’s iLab portal to explore available resources throughout the University.
